Bicycles in India are often overlooked for their invaluable contributions to commute, sports, and wellnes. For this design challenge NNCF is partnering with the many partners  to create a unique set of bicycle designs and build the proto.  The Bharath Cycle Design Challenge "A dedicated recognition of Bicycle in Bharath!" competition tasks its participants with designing a Bicycle for India. The Bharath Cycle Design Challenge  ( BCDC - spoke to Wheel ) marks an important milestone in the roadmap towards establishing the start up hub for e bikes and bicycle to transition India towards Green Mobility.

This highly interactive challenge being conducted in association with premier research institutes, will provide mentorship/bootup  sessions for startups throughout INDIA, including a consideration of how to  MAKE IN INDIA. Private Equity/VC funding can be used to develop new designs  to create the ecosystem for manufacturing cycles/e-bikes in India.

This design challenge  is a set of interactive and facilitated conversations with input from designers  from around the world. We'll surface the most important topics around these themes along with potential obstacles and solutions to addressing those challenges in India by designing solutions around the distributed manufacturing economy. 
 
Participants have total creative freedom and must propose which public environment in which city they feel would benefit most from their markers’ designs.Competition is open to all. No professional qualification is required. Design proposals can be developed individually or by teams (4 team members maximum). Correspondence with organizers must be conducted in English; All information submitted by participants must be in English.

BCDC is  linked to the Bharath Context and have the potential to inspire others and enrich the community in which it’s operational. The bicycle would need to be highly versatile and function in any climate and any season. Finding talent on both the design side and the bike craft side- in India - that could work well together; funding; shaping an online competition for a real-life product..

India was one of the leaders in Bicycle Manufacturing , but in the last two decades India has LOST the opportunity to be a world leader in exporting bicycles. China and Taiwan have captured the opportunity and have developed complete ecosystems for making the best cycles. BCDC creates multiple windows to explore initiatives to win in the global market. Post Corona with the push for "Make In India" and the reduction on the dependency of chinese imports world over - there is a great opportunity for India to promote cycles and sustainability.

Challenges

India Imports around 7-8 lakhs cycles and cycle parts from china. Taiwan a small nation is the leading exporter of cycles to USA. India lost the competetiveness in the 1990’s to china and taiwan - due to strategic policy mistakes and lack of innovation in delivering quality cycles.

Indian cycles not penetrated the middle class market for wellness and attractiveness..The Indian bicycle industry is the second largest in the world, next only to China, with an annual production of 22 million and a turnover of Rs 7000 crore; through 4000 MSMEs that employ nearly one million people in the entire value chain. However, the industry suffers on account of technology gap, lack of usage of superior materials and demand-related bottlenecks. The dependence of the industry on institutional sales is substantial.  Indian Middle class has drifted away from the bicycle to the two wheeler and cars. This shift need to be reversed by enabling cycles that meet the multiple needs of the middle class.

Indian cycle manufacturing is lagging in research and design to take on the global competition. We just don’t need a designer with a bicycle design. What we need is a design culture for bicycle designing.  This is the first step in this direction , done for the first time in India. Great design starts with the customer.

Due to the large dependency of the Indian cycle industry on the Institutional Sales, there has been a stagnancy in the make of the cycles as the industry does not see demand in the market for the low cost cycles. With margins very less for these cycles - the design and the make has remained same for the last few decades.

Revenue forecast in 2028	USD 92.49 billion Globally . Even the premium cycle category seems to be clocking growth. As per industry estimates, the premium bicycle segment (Rs. 15,000 - 30,000) is worth approx. Rs. 350 crore and the super-premium segment (above Rs 30,000) is worth approx. Rs 110 crore in India.

The BCDC  Challenge is a national design award that celebrates, encourages and inspires the next generation of designers to rethink the design and making of bicycles in India. + Submissions are shortlisted
+ The 1st  Virtual Round - Short listed  Submissions are selected for final pitching. They have to form a team and build complete concepts during the Hackathon that will be held in the IISc campus on May 15- May 16. Based on the design inputs - winners are selected.

+  2nd is Final Round. In this round we intend to enable building of these bikes. This competition consists of several tests, which are to be performed by the Bicycle/E-Bike, successfully clearing each test, and the task decides their existence in the competition. This design challenge provides a platform to teams for showcasing their creativity and engineering skills.  After the final round - that will work in parallel to explore solutions that span practice and theory.
+ These solutions are presented with design drawings, designs, and a marketing strategy on the following day, in the presence of key stakeholders and anyone involved in the future of sustainable transportation in India.

+ Products are selected in each theme for Distributed Manufacturing and Scaling Up. Total 15 product designs are finalized in the themes mentioned below.
